My Weight Loss Story

Thin.

What comes up for you when you read that word? Does it make you uncomfortable? Unhappy? Are you annoyed with (or disappointed in) me for bringing a “diet” word into this holistic wellness space?

The words ‘weight’ and ‘thin’ get thrown around without much thought, but they mean very different things to different people. Today I want to share my definition of thin and my own weight loss story so you can understand what my new book Thin From Within is really about.

Spoiler alert: it’s not about a number on the scale.

So if it’s not about the pounds (or kilos!), what does weight mean to me?

My struggle with my weight and dieting history is not dissimilar to many others; I ate a lot and used it as a bonding time with my dad, and I was always beating myself up over my weight. Why couldn’t I just eat what I wanted and be thin like the girls in the magazines?

I had it all wrong.

You see, as I came into adulthood, I was kind of lost in my life. I wasn’t happy in my jobs. I was drinking and partying way too much, and was hanging out with people who didn’t have my best interests in mind. I felt like I had no direction. Not to mention my finances were a mess.

Hmmm…wonder why I was unhappy…

It took a long time for me to realize that being unhappy with my physical body was a result of so much more than just the food I was eating (or not eating).

A desire to lose weight is a sign that we want something to be different in our bodies, but even more so, in our lives.

Guilt, anxiety, a reliance on alcohol, concerns about money, and a feeling of something that just isn’t right about our lives can cause us to carry a substantial amount of what I call “emotional weight.”

This is why you can follow the diets and the meal plans, but still not lose those stubborn 5 (or 10 or 15) pounds. There’s more than just food that’s weighing you down.

So how did I shed the emotional weight?

It didn’t happen overnight, and it wasn’t always easy. Sometimes, it still isn’t! But I can tell you that when I don’t eat the way that nourishes my body, I feel it—not just physically but emotionally as well. This misalignment is palpable.

When I eat the way that I teach in my book, Thin From Within, I’m energized, happy and I feel good getting dressed most every morning. I’m only about 10-15 pounds lighter than I was at my heaviest. But what’s amazing is that I feel (and look) so much better! I see things so much more clearly and the future looks like…well, it looks like the future that I’m choosing to create for myself.

Thin is not a number on the scale or a pant size or waist measurement. Thin is a feeling in your body.

Through the recipes and practices that I share in this book, you too will learn to nourish your gut and balance out those other parts of your life that are weighing you down. You’ll naturally reach a weight that’s ideal for your unique body. Your physical and emotional self coming together is the secret recipe to being “thin from within.”
