Last year I set the intention to read more, especially at night. I found myself scrolling Instagram and being on the phone more than I wanted almost every evening, and at the same time wishing I had more time to read and feed that part of me that loves to learn. Sound like you too?
So I swapped my phone for books (or my Kindle) and am happy to report I’ve been *mostly* keeping up with it the past few months. Not only is my sleep better, but it feels good to make my way through the stack of books on my bedside table (and bookshelves and piles of books on the floor…)
Sometimes I pick up a good fiction title, but most of the time my reading is in some form or shape related to my work. I’m fortunate in the fact that my “work” includes health, wellness, spirituality and personal development – the stuff I ENJOY reading and learning about. I’m guessing if you’re on this email list these are topics you’re interested in too, whether it relates to your “work” or not.
Today I want to share a few new awesome books that are on my current reading list.
Having been in this business for over 10 years a lot of the books I read are written by friends and colleagues (side note: sometimes I have to remind myself that I’m a two-time published author myself. I still can’t believe it some days!).
The wellness world has exploded in the past couple of years, so it can be overwhelming to go to a bookstore or browse online and know which book to read.
I have personal connections with all of the authors below, so not only can I vouch for the books themselves, but also for the experts behind them – these women are the real deal.
My tip for you – don’t feel like you need to order all of these at once. Save this email, and then go with the ONE book that calls to you. Not the one you think you “should” read but the one that lights up your gut (or heart). That you can’t wait to dive into as soon as possible.
Stress Less, Accomplish More: Meditation for Extraordinary Performance by Emily Fletcher
This is not just another meditation book. Sobriety is a conversation that’s happening more and more outside of AA meetings, especially in the wellness world. After all, we yoga. We green juice. We meditate. We self-care. And yet, come the end of a long work day, the start of a weekend, an awkward social situation, we drink.
For some of us, a drink or two isn’t a “problem”, but there’s also a wave of people questioning whether or not alcohol has a part in their healthy lifestyles. If you’ve questioned your relationship with alcohol, or are curious in experimenting what life may be life without it, this book is for you. It’s both a conversation starter and a practical handbook to help you navigate social situations and explore the possibility of a booze-free life. I think Ruby has ignited such an interesting convo here and is a brilliant writer to boot.
Keto Quick Start: A Beginner’s Guide to a Whole-Foods Ketogenic Diet with More Than 100 Recipes by Diane SanFilippo
Diane has done it again with another comprehensive, easy-to-follow and GORGEOUS guide to one of the most popular current diets: the Ketogenic diet. There’s a good reason keto has attracted so many followers: it’s an effective tool for fat loss as well as a way of eating with proven benefits for many health concerns, including unstable blood sugar, neurological conditions, and epilepsy, to name a few. But getting started with keto (and weeding out the fact from fiction around this diet) can be tough. That’s where this book comes in.
In her signature practical style, Diane makes keto doable for everyone, whether you’re completely new to very low carb eating or you’ve tried it before and want to find a better way to make it work for you. I don’t follow this way of eating personally, but I still found this book to be an incredibly inspiring and useful resource – filled with tips and, of course, delicious recipes. The kind you’ll go to again and again (and are easy to memorize).
Mantras in Motion: Manifesting What You Want through Mindful Movement by Erin Stutland
I’ve shared about the power of affirmations before. What I love about Erin’s approach is that she combines movement with transformational mantras for a mind body exercise that creates results inside and out.
Why? When you move your body while repeating mantras–speaking your desires aloud–manifesting is no longer a purely intellectual exercise or an occasional craft project. Instead, you are expressing your passion through your voice and your body, putting every ounce of your energy in service of what you want.
Each chapter of this book breaks down one mantra to use to focus on a key step to achieving your best self, including unearthing your desires, releasing resistance, and taking inspired action. There’s also a 14-day plan included so that you can take what you’ve read and put it into real life action. Erin is a super smart and super practical gal, and this book is exactly like that.
