ALL about MATCHA

Today we’re talking ALL ABOUT MATCHA!

You guys have been blowing up my inbox with your matcha questions {what brand do you recommend? How do you make it? What does it taste like?} and so today I am answering all.

Before we dive in, I have a confession: I don’t really LOVE the taste of matcha.

Yup, you read that right. For how much I’ve been posting about it recently you would think that I loved the green stuff. Nope. Try as I might, I just don’t like the earthy, grassy taste.

So why do I drink it?

I drink matcha because I love the way it makes me feel. {tweet that!}

Side note: I have found a few tricks that make my matcha tastier.

Now that I’ve come clean about my love/hate relationship with matcha, let’s get to your questions!

What even is matcha??

Matcha is a powdered tea made from finely ground green tea leaves.

Does matcha contain caffeine?

Yes – the caffeine level of matcha is about half the level of a black cup of coffee. However, matcha is also rich in the rare amino acid, L-Theanine, which promotes a state of relaxation and well-being; it creates alpha waves in the brain which leads to state of calm alertness.

I’ve heard that green tea is good for weight loss. Is matcha?

Yes! A study featured in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that consuming matcha green tea can increase thermogenesis (the body’s own rate of burning calories) from a normal 8%-10% of daily energy expenditure, to between 35% and 43% of daily energy expenditure.

What are the other benefits of drinking matcha tea?

  • Clear, focused energy, minus the jitters some people get with coffee or energy drinks.
  • A stronger immune system. Matcha is high in antioxidants which help support your overall health, but especially your immune response.
  • Better memory and concentration. See note about caffeine content above.
  • Fewer tummy troubles. Matcha is less acidic than coffee which can irritate your digestive system.
  • Detox! Matcha contains chlorophyll and can help remove toxins and heavy metals from your body.

Where do you buy matcha tea?

When it comes to matcha, you want to get the good stuff – you really can taste the difference. Look for “ceremonial grade” matcha (vs culinary grade which should only be used for baking). Right now my favorite matcha comes from my friends at PANATEA. The ceremonial matcha from PANATEA is one of the best I’ve found. They’ve also just launched instant matcha – matcha that you don’t have to whisk or blend. SO COOL!

As a special gift to my readers my friends at PANATEA are including a sweet like discount code just for my readers. Head to their site and use the code “ROBYN15” for 15% off your entire purchase!

Wait, do I need to whisk matcha? How do YOU make it Robyn?

Traditionally, a bamboo whisk is used to mix matcha with hot water for a naturally frothy drink. No bamboo whisk? No problem. You can make a bulletproof style matcha (like I do!) with a blender.
